The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are currently one of only two teams in the NFL with an undefeated record.

Although the 4-0 mark for a defending champion is promising for what lies ahead, the Chiefs are dealing with many injuries on the offensive side of the football, which could ultimately derail hopes of making NFL history as the first team to win three straight Super Bowl titles.

Perhaps the most costly was seeing second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice go down in the Week 4 win against the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers, as it was a freak knee injury that involved a collision with quarterback Patrick Mahomes on an interception return.

Rice showed a lot of hustle by going after the player who intercepted Mahomes’ pass as he was able to knock the football free and cause a fumble, but it resulted in a nasty collision that could result in his season coming to an end prematurely.

Mahomes recently reflected on the unfortunate collision with Rice and how he “felt like s—” for causing the injury.

“I wasn’t really worried about myself,” Mahomes said, via Around the NFL. “I was worried about his injury and hopefully it wasn’t as bad as it looked because I was the one that hit him.”

The Chiefs have placed Rice on injured reserve, meaning he’ll have to miss at least the next four games, but the team likely anticipates him being out much longer than that.

They still don’t know the full extent of the injury, as initial test results were said to be inconclusive, which means there’s still a glimmer of hope he may be able to return this season.
